Bubbe Cookies

Yield: 3-4 dozen

This cookie recipe is my attempt to recreate the crisp sweet buttery chocolate chip sugar cookie of my childhood, Bubbe Cookies as they used to be. Although I will never be able to replicate her cookies exactly, it is my hope that this recipe will always spark a flicker of her memory and her devotion to feeding the people she loved.


  • 3/4 cup butter (1 1/2 sticks) (margarine for Pareve)
  • 1 c sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 3 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Zest and juice from 1/2 large or 1 whole small lemon or orange
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (pareve chocolate chips)
  • Maraschino cherries (optional)


Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix softened butter and sugar together. Add eggs and vanilla and mix thoroughly. Mix flour, baking powder and salt together and blend into butter, sugar, egg mixture. Add zest and juice and mix thoroughly. Add chocolate chips. Spoon onto a lightly greased (or use parchment paper) cookie pan and drop by spoonful about an inch apart. Maraschino cherries cut into small pieces may be pressed into the top of the cookie for added color if desired. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until tops are lightly browned.
