Tahini. Shakshuka. Halva.

If you’re a foodie, you’ve probably stumbled upon these at least a few times lately and maybe even tried them at some local eateries, like Little Sesame and Shouk in DC. Perhaps, you’ve even cozied up with or cooked from Michael Solomonov’s Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking or one of Yotam Ottolenghi’s cookbooks.

There’s no denying it: Israeli food is having a moment (or five).

And if you’re a DC-area resident between the ages of 22 and 26 with an appetite for adventure and ready to take your taste buds on an incredible journey, this winter you can take a break from your day-to-day routine and try Israeli food on its home turf, thanks to the new Birthright Israel: Shorashim – DC Community Trip – Flavors of Israel.

Israeli-Spread-smallOffered from February 5 to 16, 2017, the free (yes, you read that right) experience, a gift from Birthright Israel, will include the best of Israel with Israelis as well as the best of Israeli food. In addition to floating in the Dead Sea, hiking Masada and experiencing Tel Aviv’s vibrant nightlife, you will put all five senses to use, including taking in the colors of Israel’s markets and hearing the vendors hawk their goods, plucking sweet ripe tomatoes right off the vine (Did you know that the cherry tomato is an Israeli invention?) and, of course, tasting and tasting and tasting…

When you take a break from eating…it might just be to take a #selfie with a camel. Not too shabby, huh?

Throughout the entire trip, Israeli peers will accompany the group, sharing their stories (and hearing yours), showing you their favorite sites, introducing you to popular Israeli snacks and music and, perhaps, most importantly, teaching you the right way to eat hummus (Hint: Not as a dip for carrot sticks and celery!). That, by the way, is the recipe for lifelong friendships.

After seeing all your Facebook posts and photos on Instagram, your family and friends might expect you to make them a big Israeli breakfast when you get back. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
