Esther’s Elixir

Esther’s Elixir Related:   dairy, drinks, Purim

Prep time: 5 min

Cook time: n/a

Yield: 1 cocktail

Cinnamon, cloves, coriander, fennel seeds, ginger, green cardamon, nutmeg, peppercorn and star anise (oh my!) are just a few of the warming spices brewed to make a traditional chai. Fortunately, we live in an age of convenience where delicious ready-made chai mixes are available at major supermarkets. Pick one up for this sweet and spicy dessert cocktail so you can spend the extra hours on the perfect Purim costume.

  • 1/8 cup sweetened chai tea mix (liquid, not powder)
  • 1/8 cup half-and-half
  • 1/8 cup vodka (flavored vodkas like vanilla work great, too)
  • Ice for cocktail shaker
  • Optional: ground cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon sticks for garnish

If serving immediately, pour chai tea mix, half-and-half and vodka into a shaker filled with ice about ⅔ full. Agitate and strain into a martini glass. Sprinkle some ground cinnamon or pumpkin spice mix on top, and place a cinnamon stick inside the drink for extra pizzazz. If you’re making ahead, mix the chai and half-and-half, cover securely and chill in the fridge. Just before serving, add the vodka, stir, pour and garnish.
