Classic Manhattan

Classic Manhattan Related:   drinks, North America, pareve

Prep time: 5 mins

Cook time: None

Yield: 1 cocktail

If you’re a purist and use bitters for your cocktails only, I love to use the classic Manhattan as a way to highlight flavor changes. Traditionally, aromatic bitters are used in a Manhattan. My world changed a few years ago when a bartender ran out of Peychaud’s and asked if I’d be willing to try my drink with Mexican chocolate bitters. It’s my new favorite.

  • 2 ounces rye whiskey
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 1 dash bitters
  • 1 teaspoon Maraschino cherry juice (use a good brand, not those neon red ones)
  • 1 Maraschino cherry for garnish

  • Pour into a mixing glass with crushed ice, stir and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a cherry.
