Sephardic Heritage IN DC (SHin-DC) presents its annual Hanukkah program: The Extra Flame—Understanding Refugee Crises Thru a Syrian Hanukkah Custom & Concert featuring Syria’s First Opera Singer: Lubana Al Quntar.

We welcome people of all faiths and cultures. Join your light with ours, as we kindle an extra flame for the holiday menorah lighting per unique custom passed on by some Syrian Jews, commemorating the safety and tolerance once found in Aleppo as Iberian refugees circa 1492.

On this 5th night of Hanukkah, Al Quntar, who found a new beginning in DC about five years ago, will sing for Syria and all those suffering in today’s world. There will be presentations by special guest speakers and Syrian Hanukkah food will be served: Ataiyef (thin and lacy ricotta-filled pancakes with pistachio’ed tips); Ejjeh Batata (potato and egg fritters served with pita, roasted cauliflower, pickled veggies/hamutzim, yogurt-cucumber-mint dip, tehina)
